SBC2008

We were honored to be the first to represent our country in such a congress or in IEEE event.
SBC the biannual IEEE Region 8 Student Branch and GOLD (Graduates Of the Last decade) Congress is the biggest event in the world for young engineering professionals and students.
What one can imagine if 300 young engineers or students, the most active, most enthusiastic and most diligent among their peers are all together in one place… what can they do? They can do a lot; they can be alone as powerful as any huge organization. They can give birth to the life.
All of those keen people were there, gathering in one place to learn new useful skills, meet, socialize and share professional experience with each other. Side by side with the first row people of the world’s largest non-profit professional organization and the most important for all engineers IEEE.
The life was there, youth from more than 40 countries and three continents with different cultural came to join their brothers in engineering.
Everything was prepared for us; accommodation was in campus of the Queen Mary University of London. This city has been part of many important movements and phenomena throughout history such as the
Industrial Revolution. London which boasts many world heritage sites such as the historic settlement of Greenwich where people from all over the world set the time according to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
As the first representatives from Syria, many members were gladdened to meet us and to get to know more about Syria. We had the chance to show them the bright side of our history and to prove that we are able to keep up with new technology.
During the sessions, discussions and workshops we told them about difficulties that encounter the technological progress and improvement in our country nowadays and the challenges facing young engineers there. We also carried our demands to them and asked about our needs and requirements as new branch.
What was really interesting and astonishing in the congress is the nature of the region 8 where the attendees came from; Middle east together with Africa, Asia and Europe.
At last we seized the opportunity to meet industry in the career fair that took place in the campus of Queen Mary University of London and as all things there, it was marvelous because of the diversity of the companies came there to meet young engineers and students, research centers and institutes and companies from different countries specialized in many different fields. They all were looking for engineers to join their teams. That special event helped to bridge the gap between academia and industry and gave the attendees a new horizon.
